The navigation computer onboard my boat has sailed its last day. I have been able to salvage the hard drive and hooked it up to my home computer to recover the files. I was hoping there might be a way to recover the waypoint/mark information from the hard drive and import it into the new computer I just purchaced for the boat. I tried overwriting some files but that was a bad idea and lead to a re-install of OSN.

Any help would be appreciated :)

FWIW, I just tried saving a mark.
Then checked what, if any, files had been changed as a result.

The only file apparently affected, I assume where this data is stored, is
C:\Program Files\Maptech\Offshore Navigator\data\DataWindows.dat

Note, this is a Windows98 system.

Caveat: I'm just a rank-n-file deck ape and speak from pure ignorance.

Sorry, I spoke too soon.

Actually, a bunch of files in the Maptech\Offshore Navigator\data\ area were changed
including a file named marks.dat

The DataWindows.dat file was the last one to be modified on exit of the app.

Chris,

What you can do is go into the hard drive that you are trying to recover the data from, follow this path: Program Files\Maptech\Offshore Navigator\data, and copy all of the files with .DAT and .EXT extensions into the data folder on your new hard drive. On your new drive the data folder will be on the same path. (Program Files\Maptech\Offshore Navigator\data) This should recover most, if not all, of your data.

I hate to beat a dead horse, but would you be good enough to clarify your response to Chris. I am replacing my old XP machine with a Vista unit. 5.0x was installed on Vista, the MS Help program has been installed, and Offshore Navigator was updated to 5.08 without a hitch. Do I need to transfer the DAT and EXT files from just the Program Files\Maptech\Offshore Navigator\data folder to the same place on the new PC, or do the DAT and EXT files in all the subordinate folders need to come over too?

Jeff,

Just the DAT and EXT files directly in the data folder. If your old computer can still be used, it may be easier and more reliable for you to open the Offshore Navigator program on your old computer, go to File > Export Data to File > Marks (you would have to do Routes and Track separately) This will allow you to export all data out of the program files onto your hard drive and in a format that can be imported into Offshore Navigator on your new computer. You can copy these files to a disk and copy to the hard drive on your new computer, where you can then use the File > Import data from File option to import your waypoints into Offshore Navigator.
